The Nerd Reviews: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

I have been waiting for this film for what seems like forever and now that it's out, is it any good?

Plot: The movie picks up after the events of the first film ( which if you haven't seen it's ok because they kinda go over the important events within the film) with our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man enjoying his time under the mask but soon finds himself going toe to toe with the new villain Electro, Goblin and Rhino; and if that wasn't enough his personal life also starts to take a dive with his relationship with Gwen in flux and the search for the truth behind his parent's disappearance giving shocking revelations. I am happy to announce that the plot doesn't suffer from SM3 syndrome, which is to say that it doesn't have a million things happening all at once that bogs down the story. Yes, having 3 villains ( well really like 2.5 villains) could led to underdeveloped characters and motivations but the way they handle it in the film makes it feel more natural than in Spider-Man 3. That isn't to say that it perfectly handles all the characters, I felt that the Goblin was only there for one thing at the end, but it doesn't take away so much from the pacing so it's really a minor complaint.

Action:  This movie doesn't disappoint on this end as the action sequences seemed like they are pulled straight out of the comics...and that's a good thing. Whether it's Spidey stopping a robbery, saving an officer from a falling police car or going head up with Electro, it all works well within the context of the film. Spider-Man is very strong...like really strong and the film once again plays that up with Spidey casually catching a police car or stopping a bus from tipping off with the greatest of ease, it really feels like you're watching a man with the proportionate strength and speed of spider go to work. Did I mention that spider sense is back in this film? Because it is and it's awesome, well I mean its another " everything freezes and gives spidey time to analyze the situation" thing but hey that's pretty much how spidey sense works so if it aint broke...

Does

Acting: Andrew delivers another great performance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He just has this character down from the funny quips ( which are just so Peter) to the serious moments, he embodies both sides of Parker so well that I'm pretty sure he actually has Spider-Man like powers. A lot of the time Peter is on screen he's sharing it with Gwen Stacey, played by Emma Stone of course, and their on screen chemistry really makes their relationship believable and makes you actually care about what happens to them ( I didnt give a damn what happened MJ in the original trilogy) and that's thanks in no small part to how Emma plays Gwen. The newcomers to the series are Jamie Foxx (Django) and Dane Deehan ( Chronicle) playing Electro and Harry Osborn, respectively. Jamie did a serviceable job playing the invisible Max Dillion but his performance is one of the lower ones in comparison to the rest of the cast, especially of that of Dane's. Dane as Harry Osborn was a stroke of brilliant casting, he looks like the son of a distant, self-obsessed billionaire and holy crap does he have that villainous face down. He brings a sort of intensity to the character that previous iterations just did not have, he was actually unsettling as he was equal parts intelligent and ruthless...you could definitely see him running a business one day and savagely beating up guards the next and not even question it.
See what I said? Freaking creepy.

Overall: I give this an 8.9/10. I know you guys are gonna be like " but you're a Spider-Man fanboy of course you're gonna give it a good score" to which I say " If it was about being biased, I would have given it a 499999/10 and added that it's better than all the DC and Marvel films combined!" I am fully aware of it's issues, like how the Green Goblin as villain was less menacing than Harry or how it kind of bit off SM2 with its " hero needing a child/talk from his aunt to get his shit together" or how certain things only happened because it was needed to advance the plot; I'm aware of all of that but it doesn't drastically take away from the film, nor does the film suffer greatly from it. It's a comic book movie, it's gonna be a bit cheesy because superhero comics are a bit cheesy and I can't fault the film for it; in fact I should praise the film for trying to combine the world of comics and reality in such a way that it feels grounded yet fantastical. It's an enjoyable film whether you're a fan of Spider-Man or not ( though as a fan you will be happy to know that they address how Spider-Man isn't a roasted spider when fighting Electro) and to all the critics who are just ripping this film to shreds I just think they wanted to hate this film, which is their job, and my job is to tell you guys what I think and I think you should watch it, you will enjoy it.

Or don't watch it but next time your house is on fire, guess who won't be there to save you?
