The Nerd Reviews: Deadpool

It is the best work Fox has ever done with a superhero film and it makes me wonder why the hell they couldn’t have done this before. From the opening credits to the post credit scene, the movie captures the essence of Deadpool (and not the Way run either if that is a concern). Ryan Reynolds shines as the titular character, his charm and wit flow as freely as the blood of his enemies, in this origins film that is nothing like that...other...origins film. Deadpool has to safe his girl/the day and while that plot point has been done to death (especially in this genre), there is another originality in this film to easily overlook it; from the, quite possibly best, appearance of Colossus to the banter between Wade and Weasel (TJ Miller), the film manages to go from superhero trope to straight up humor without skipping a beat. One thing I really liked about this film is just how well it can handle different subject matter without it becoming stale, and also how they were actually able to craft a villain I didn’t sympathize with and absolutely wanted him to lose. I feel like far too often they try to make the villain human instead of just a
They really nailed him from the look to the personality
massive douchebag, because sometimes you just want to see the hero win and not have to deal with morals and stuff. Speaking of morals, it was refreshing to see that they didn’t appear in this film as much as other superhero films, in fact the only character with really any sort of ethics is Colossus and before I didn’t get why he was in the film but after seeing it I totally get why it had to be him. Deadpool is a merc and also former special forces and that training is  where the R rating comes into play; this shit is violent and bloody but not in a way that its tasteless. It takes the “rip the band aid” approach in that there are instance of extreme violence but the film never stops to pause on it for longer than a few seconds and any long stretch of violence is broken up by some Deadpool 4th wall breaking (which is done in such a way that its not annoying and actually enhances the film).

Did I mention he has a mouth on him?
Normally this is the part where I would tell you the cons of this film and have a laundry list of things to complain about (I am a nerd after all) but for the life of me I can't think of one? Umm how about too many Easter eggs? Not enough Bea Arthur references? I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel here I know so lets just get to the end of this review (I swear I am not being paid by Fox).
There is a lot happening in this film, from all the jokes about superhero films to having to fit in a coherent origin story, but it never feels overstuffed; a film with Deadpool, Copycat, Colossus, NegaSonic, Angel dust, Weasel, Blind Al and Ajax actually manages to keep the focus on Deadpool without diminishing the roles of the others...unlike the Singer X-Men films which loses its mind anytime it has to deal with not Wolverine, Mystique, Magneto or Charles. Look this is a really good superhero film because its just a really good film, it knows what it is and never tries to lie to you about it (well unless you count that one ad) and is the best reason for studios to start putting out R rated hero films...I’m looking at you Suicide Squad. The film's humor may not be to your liking if you aren't fan of swearing and nudity but if you like your films with a little bit of raunch then you'll have no problems watching it, you don't even have to know anything about this universe to enjoy the film (which is refreshing since the Marvel Cinematic Universe pretty much makes you have to watch any film they put out to catch all the references).

Congratulations Fox, by not stepping in like you did for...all your films (especially Failtastic Four) you've actually produced a film that people wanna see. What do you think about that Wade?
